Jessie W. Barrett (1884-1953) was the first editor of the student newspaper that became the Hatchet. He served as Missouri’s Attorney General from 1921-1925, and his term was highlighted by favorable decisions in the U.S. Supreme Court on the Missouri corporation franchise tax and in the State Supreme Court on the state automobile and income taxes. He was credited with saving vast sums for the state. In 1944 he was named by the Missouri Supreme Court as Chairman of a committee to integrate the Missouri bar. Partial integration had been accomplished ten years earlier when he was President of the Missouri Bar Association. Barrett was a Republican nominee for governor in 1936.
