Alumni

Elizabeth Clagett "Betty" Clark graduated from The George Washington University with an A.B. degree in 1929. She was a member of the women’s rifle team at GW for three years (1927-1929), during which time the team won the National Rifle Association national championship each year. Teammate and captain Helen Taylor broke the world record for conscutive bull's eyes in 1928, by shooting 72 consecutive shots into a bull's eye one eighth of an inch in diameter. She accomplished this from a prone position and a distance of fifty feet. Walter Stokes (GW LL.B., 1924, M.D., 1928), former Olympic (1924) and world champion (1921-1924) marksman, served as the coach until 1928. In 1928 Ms. Clark served as manager of the team, and as coach in 1929 and 1930. By then her work as a journalist prevented her from continuing as coach. Ms. Clark was active in many organizations while a student. These included Kappa Delta, Glee Club, Fencing, President of the Hour Glass, and was a member of the Women’s Athletic Association (WAA) Executive Board.
