Conferences and GW
GW existed as an independent until 1940 when the University became a member of the Southern Conference. The University would remain in the Southern Conference until 1970 when it again became independent. Between 1978 and 1982 the team was a part of the Eastern Athletic Association (Eastern Eight). In 1983, the school joined the newly-created Atlantic 10 Conference.
Women's teams at GW were active in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) in the 1970s, before the NCAA's sponsorship of women's championships in 1981. Regarding conference affiliation, the Colonial Women remained independent until 1983, when they and the Men's program joined the Atlantic 10. Current membership of the conference includes Duquesne, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure, St. Joseph's, Fordham, University of Dayton, La Salle, Temple, Xavier, University of Richmond, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Saint Joseph’s, Saint Louis and George Washington. As of the ‘06 season the Atlantic 10 divided into the East and West Divisions.
