Description: The building was named for William H. Crawford, a long-time political figure in his native Georgia and a Secretary of the Treasury under both Presidents Madison and Monroe. He was Secretary of the Treasury when Monroe signed the charter of our University's ancestor institution known as Columbian College on February 9, 1821. Crawford, a Georgia native, was a United States presidential candidate in 1824 despite having sufferred a paralyzing stroke the previous year. A University benefactor, as was his presidential rival John Quincy Adams, the University dedicated the building to Crawford when it acquired the former apartment building in 1963-1964. It became co-ed in 1972/1973.
