Department of Athletics and Recreation

Organized athletics have been a part of The George Washington University since the late nineteenth century. The Department of Athletics and Recreation is headed by a Director of Athletics, who oversees the following units: Administration, Academic Support, Recreational Sports, Athletics Communications (sports information and community outreach), Sports Medicine, Baseball, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Gymnastics, Women's Lacrosse, Rowing, Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Softball, Squash, Swimming & Diving, Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis, Volleyball, Men's Water Polo and Women's Water Polo.

Before 1988 there were separate Departments for men and women's athletics. The Director of Athletics reports to the Vice President for Student and Academic Support Services. The Department publishes annual media guides for varsity sports.
