J Street Resolution
From GWUEncyc
Article
An urban legend has it that Washington, D.C., has no 'J' Street because city designer Pierre L'Enfant bore a grudge against Chief Justice John Jay. However, the most reasonable answer is that J and I look too much alike and could easily have been confused in the handwriting of the 18th century. Whatever the case, in 1994 GW got its own “J” Street, by way of a resolution from the D.C. City Council.
Whereas, the George Washington University has been a duly chartered institution of higher learning in the District of Columbia since 1821;
Whereas, the George Washington University is currently one of the largest non-government employers in the District of Columbia;
Whereas, the George Washington University Medical Center provides quality medical services, including approximately $30 million in uncompensated medical care annually, to residents of the District of Columbia;
Whereas, students, faculty, and staff of the George Washington University serve the District’s youth, senior, and underprivileged populations through numerous university pre-college and community service programs;
Whereas, facilities of the George Washington University are located in the general area bounded by K Street on the North, F Street on the South, 19th Street on the East, and 24th Street on the West; and
Whereas, there is no official designation of a J Street in the northwest section of the district;
Resolved, by the council of the District of Columbia, that this resolution may be cited as the “George Washington University J Street Food Court Resolution of 1994”.
Sec. 2. The council of the District of Columbia declares that the George Washington University’s food court be henceforth known as “J Street”, and encourages all residents of the District to join in this declaration.
This resolution shall take effect immediately.
I hereby Certify that this Resolution is true and adapted as stated herein.
