Description: This building, along with the two row houses to the north, are representative of GW’s reuse of vernacular architecture found throughout the Foggy Bottom area. The Adams House is constructed of brown brick with a red tile roof and decorative molded brick detailing. Diamond decorations separate the first and second floors and an elaborate corbelled brick cornice caps the structure. The building was named for John Quincy Adams, the sixth President of the United States, who, when Secretary of State, participated in the University's first commencement in 1824. Adams was also the principle creditor for the early college.
