Description: This four-story building opened for classes in Spring 1952, and cost $600,000 to build. It was named for the fifth President of the United States. President Monroe was instrumental in the founding of the University; he signed the act of incorporation February 9, 1821 and participated in its first commencement in 1824. Monroe Hall was built by Charles H. Tompkins Company, and is of functional design, constructed of reinforced concrete faced with Indiana limestone. The entrance is faced with contrasting imperial granite imported from Sweden. The buildings large windows ensure an even distribution of light. Monroe Hall was built to supersede Building D- the Social Science Hall, 2013 G Street.
