Student Life (1980s)
The Student Association, established in 1976, continued its functions of registering students as members, establishing channels of communication within the university, encouraging participation in campus organization and maintaining the Student Advocate Service (SAS). The SA published the Student Directory and the Academic Evaluation Course Guide. The GW Judicial system for non-academic student discipline was established by the Board of Trustees and was based on the "Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities." The Judicial system included the Residence Hall Court, The Student Traffic Court and Student Court.
The Dimock Gallery and Lisner Auditorium served the cultural life of the University. With this the GW Dance Company, GW Orchestra Band, Chorus and Choir, University Theater (four main-stage productions during the academic year and one summer musical) contributed to the cultural life of Washington.
Publications included the Advocate (Law), Campus Highlights (Student Activity office), the Cherry Tree, The GW Forum, The George Washington Law Review, GW Times, The Hatchet, The Journal of International Law and Economics, The Monday Report, Potomac Review, This Month in Washington and Wooden Teeth. WRGW campus radio and GWTV were a prominent part of GW Media productions.
Campus Organizations included the International Law Society, GW Philosophy Club, Women's Athletic Advisory Council, Black Engineers' Society, Black American Law Students Association, GW Investments Association, Student Bar Association, GW Vocal Ensemble and Pre-medical Society.
Greek organizations included Alpha Phi Delta (men), Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. (Women), Phi Sigma Kappa (men), Kapa Kappa Gamma (women) and six other Greek fraternities and sororities.
Clubs and organizations included the International and cultural, African Students Organization, American Iranian Educational Society, Asian Students Association, Chinese Student Association, Cu Cai Club, Ecuadorian Students Association, Eritrean Relief, French Club, Friends of Pakistan, GW German Club, Hellenic Society, GW Indian, Student Association, International Student Society, Iranian Student Association for Unity, Jewish Activist front GW Korean Student Association, Muslim Student Association and the Union of Palestinian Students, Womanspace, Black Peoples Union, Gay People's Alliance of GW, Second Opinion and Program Board Student Association. Religious organizations included the Baha'i Club, Hillel Foundation, Moslem Student Society, Sri Chinmoy Centre, Students' International Meditation Society and Summit. - 1981 Student Handbook
