University Marshal

The University Marshal reports to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, and oversees official functions at the University, such as commencements, the conferring of honorary degrees, opening convocation for the school year, and other special ceremonies. Robert Jones, professor of Religion, held the post for twenty years, from 1969-1989, during which time the ceremonial mace came into use (1981). Before him, John Latimer, professor of Classics, served in the position from 1953-69.
