WRGW Chronology

1929 – The Radio Club is organized by Howard Cole, Samuel Hall and Albert Webster. It owns and operates the radio transmitting station, W3ACY, which offers to students and instructors of the university a free radiogram service from October to June. The transmitting station is located in Corcoran 39.

1930 – The headquarters of the College Radio Union “unites other stations for purposes of handling student messages.”

1933 – The Radio Club’s “radio amateurs who compose its membership meet occasionally to discuss new developments and work on sets.”

1934-1949 – The Radio Club is inactive.

1950 – A Radio Workshop is offered as a student activity.

1951 – The Radio Workshop “affords experience in all phases of radio work.”

1952-1957 – The Radio Workshop is inactive.

1958 - WRGW re-established offering limited broadcasting as an extra curricular activity. A “working laboratory program may be heard in the Student Union.”

1959 – WRGW broadcasts “during the day.”

1961 – WRGW offers one half-hour to two hours of music or commentary daily.

1962 – WRGW plans to offer expanded programming.

1963-64 – WRGW off the air.

1964 – WRGW goes on the air at 680 AM in the Student Union and the residence halls.

1972 – WRGW broadcasts from 7:00 AM to 3:00AM. Opens new “Dee Jay facilities” on “deck five” of Lisner Auditorium. Deck four contains the production studio and a “priority-one” conference studio. Deck three contains a classroom that doubles as officer’s quarters and the news center.

1977 – WRGW changes its signal to 540 AM.

1986 – WRGW moves its operations to the fourth floor of the Marvin Center.

1988 – WRGW broadcasts from 9:00 am to 1:00 am.
