Washington Conferences on Theoretical Physics
From GWUEncyc
Article
These conferences were held under the joint auspices of The George Washington University and the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism of the Carnegie Institution. The first of the invitational conferences were organized in 1935 by George Gamow, Edward Teller, and Merle Tuve. They were designed to promote thinking and discussion of unsolved problems in theoretical physics.
1935: Nuclear Physics
1936: Molecular Physics
1937: Elementary Particles
1938: Stellar Energy
1939: Low Temperature (Nuclear fission became the main topic of discussion.)
1940: Interior of the Earth
1941: Stellar Evolution and Cosmology
1946: Physics of Living Matter
1947: Gravitation and Electromagnetism
